Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, honours the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an obedient act of God’s command. Before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God provided him with a lamb to sacrifice instead therefore in commemoration of this intervention animals are ritually sacrificed. One third of the meat is consumer by family and the rest is distributed to those in need. Sweets and gifts will be given and extended family are typically visited and welcomed.
