Tisha B’Av

Tisha B’Av is an annual feast day for Jews. It is today that a number of disasters in Jewish history occurred – the destruction of Solomon’s Temple by the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the Second Temple by the Roman Empire. The saddest day in the Jewish year is Tisha B’Av and many believe today is a day destined for tragedy. The day is observed by prohibiting five things – there is a 25 hour fast as food is prohibited. The Book of Lamentations will be read int eh Synagogue as it mourns the destruction of Jerusalem. Thius day also remembers other major tragedies such as the murder of the Ten Martyrs, massacres in numerous medieval Jewish communities and the holocaust.
