Visit to a Sikh Gurdwara

The Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Administrator had the privilege of joining Jasmit, our Sikh Chaplain, along with several guests, on a visit to Gurdwara Sahib in Leicester. While Leicester is home to several Sikh temples (known as Gurdwaras), this particular one was chosen for the visit. Gurdwara Sahib is a relatively new building, having opened just two years ago. It was built to serve the Sikh community after they relocated from their previous site, where they had worshipped for over 50 years.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by a volunteer who kindly guided us through the Gurdwara and explained the significance of what we saw. One highlight was a live demonstration on how to tie a turban, including an explanation of the different styles, which often reflect the region of origin.

We were also given the opportunity to view the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture. The priest respectfully uncovered it for us, and we saw the special four-poster bed where the scripture is placed to rest each night.

Lunch was generously provided to all visitors. This vegetarian meal, known as langar, is a central part of Sikh hospitality and inclusivity. Everyone is welcome to partake, and visitors are also encouraged to contribute through sewa (selfless service), whether by helping in the kitchen or elsewhere in the Gurdwara.
