Onam, ഓണം, is an annual festival celebrated in Kerala. A harvest festival celebrated by all Malayalis. The date is based on the Panchangam – 22nd in the Malayali month of Chingam. Legend says Onam is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali whose spirit visits Kerala every Onam. Celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower rangoli), Onathappan (worship), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes) and Attachamayam (folk songs and dance). This is New Year for Malayalis.
