Great and Holy Friday

Today is Great and Holy Friday for Orthodox Christians and it commemorates the death of Christ Jesus on the cross. Today is the culmination of the observance of His passion and death for our sins. On the Thursday evening there will be Matins of Holy Friday which concludes with a Vespers oh Holy Friday afternoon observing the unnailing of Christ from the cross and placing His body in the tomb. The day of Christ’s death is a day of sin – sin that polluted God’s creation. Ungodly men nailed Him to a cross to destroy Him but His death condemned the fallen and sinned because in Christ there is no sin and therefore no death. He chose to accept death to destroy it and to break the hold on evil and sin. Christ’s death is the ultimate revelation of His perfect obedience and love.
